Transforms with high efficiency. Like manycloning strains, DH5 alpha has several features that make it useful forrecombinant DNA methods.
§TheendA1mutation inactivates an intracellularendonuclease that degrades plasmid DNA in many miniprep methods.
§ThehsdR17mutation eliminates the restrictionendonuclease of the EcoKI restriction-modification system, so DNA lacking theEcoKI methylation will not be degraded. DNA prepared from hsdR strains that arewt forhsdMwill be methylated and can be used totransform wtE. coliK-12 strains.
§Δ(lacZ)M15 is thealpha acceptorallele needed for blue-white screeningwith many lacZ based vectors.
