The important features of
pSC11 are the presence of the lacZ gene under the control of
the 11K promoter, a second vaccinia virus promoter derived
from a vaccinia virus gene that encodes a 7.5K polypeptide
, a unique SmaI site downstream of the 7.5K promoter
for the insertion of foreign protein-coding sequences, and
flanking vaccinia virus TK sequences for homologous recombination.
The two promoters were oriented in opposite
directions to prevent the possibility of polarity effects.
